The Serama — the tiniest chicken breed to ever grace our farm! Imagine a rooster the size of a pigeon strutting around with all the charm and charisma of a top-tier chicken celebrity. Yes, that's our Serama for you!
Here at Sugar Feather Farm, Seramas hold a special place in our hearts as one of our specialty breeds. Because of their unique size and disposition, Seramas require a touch of customized care to keep them thriving and happy. But fear not, for we are well-versed in the art of pampering these mini marvels and are here to help you along the way!
Young chicks are delicate and require special attention. We only sell chicks that are at least 3 weeks old. It's important to monitor them for heat-related problems and pasty butt. Keep them separate from larger birds. To ensure their safety, we will not ship chicks under 3 weeks old. You can pick them up at the farm when they reach 3 weeks. We are still offering fully feathered chicks and hatching eggs for shipping.
Seramas come in 2000+ colors, not breeding true to one color. Hatch results are a surprise with varying sizes - micro to full size. We have frizzle, silked, smooth feathered types in different colors. Eggs range from white to light tan. Our birds are Non-GMO, vaccinated for Marek's Disease. True Seramas are fragile, not cold-resistant, needing special care, boasting unique body and feather patterns. Be cautious of mixed breeds claiming to be Seramas.
In winter, tropical birds like our small friendly ones may need extra warmth if it's 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. We provide heat for them to survive Vermont's colder temperatures. Some people keep them inside year-round because they are very small and gentle, enjoying human company. These birds can be trained and enjoy participating in tabletop competitions. They are social, vocal, and need secure housing due to their size. Roosters are friendly, have unique personalities, and can be good pets or live with other birds. Hens like to sit on eggs and be pampered. Having a good ratio of hens to roosters prevents conflicts. You can separate them into groups or pairs easily due to their small size. These birds can even be kept as indoor pets in cages meant for small animals. Feel free to ask us for advice or check online for more ideas!

We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switch to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.
We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.

Seramas originated in Malaysia, where they are the number one house pet, outnumbering dogs and cats. The rooster crow is adorable! Seramas were brought to the USA in 2001, so they are relatively new to the USA!
The complete ancestry of the Serama is uncertain and there are many claims and myths regarding it’s origin. Some theories date as far back to the 1600s and to the Thai King Sri Rama, although there is no documented evidence to prove this. The creator of the modern Serama bantam is Wee Yean Een. In 1971 he began a breeding program that would see Ayam Kapans crossed with Japanese bantams and Silkies.
