Heritage Plymouth Rock Chicks

The Plymouth Rock chicken, often referred to as the Barred Plymouth Rock, is a popular heritage breed of chicken that has a long and esteemed history in the United States. We have been impressed with their overall beauty and just an all around nice bird. They are docile, gentle, and super friendly. They are a dual-purpose heritage breed that will produce around 250 brown eggs a year. Since they are winter hearty and handle the heat well they are a fit for any climate. Their lifespan is 6-8 years, but they can live longer.

The Plymouth Rock was developed in America in the middle of the 19th century and was first exhibited in Boston, Massachusetts as a breed in 1849. These first specimens seemed to “lose their identity” and the breed disappeared for two decades until it reappeared at another poultry show in Worchester, Massachusetts in 1869. These later birds are considered the progenitors of the Plymouth Rocks we know today.

We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switching to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.
