When we first encountered the magnificent Sanjak Longcrower (Rogaš) chickens, we instantly recognized their special place here at Sugar Feather Farm. These impressive birds can weigh between 8 to 13 pounds and stand tall with an upright crest. Their remarkable feature is a long, deep crow that resonates for an impressive 10-20 seconds, defining them as true longcrowers.
Rogaš chickens are friendly and come in various feather colors, including black, mottled, and black with reddish shoulders. Hens within this breed tend to go broody and often lay large eggs that range from white to off-white. Originating from the Sanjak region—a unique intersection of Serbia, Bosnia, and Kosovo—these birds were once classified as a colored variety of the Kosova Longcrower. However, the Sanjak Longcrower stands out as a distinct, long-lived dual-purpose breed, now facing dwindling numbers due to shifting regional needs and demographics.
With a rich history that includes depictions in paintings from the Ottoman Empire, the Sanjak Longcrower (Rogaš) is classified as a landrace breed. It’s fascinating to note that there are over 15 types of Longcrower chickens, though most of them are not found in the United States. At Sugar Feather Farm, we are proud to help preserve this unique breed and continue to cherish its heritage.

While the Sanjak Longcrower’s history is somewhat shrouded in mystery, it’s clear that they’re descendants of the Bosnian Crower, which is also an ancestor of the Bergischer Crower and Kosovar Crower. These breeds were brought from the Balkans to the Bergisches Land in the Middle Ages. The Sanjak Longcrower has several names due to its multi-ethnic and trans-national origins, including rogas, bosnjak, boshnjak, pulat boshnjake, kengetar bosnjake, and pulat dukagjinit. This breed is rich in tradition, culture, and history, making it a valuable addition to any flock.

We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switching to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.
We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.
